Whipped Cream, Soft Balm or Firm Balm? How to Choose Your Tallow
Here's a thing we find slightly ridiculous about skincare: you can spend forty minutes trying to work out which of four products you need, and by the end of it you've learnt nothing except that you're tired.
So this is the short version. Every jar is built from the same very short list of honest things — British grass-fed tallow, organic honey, organic beeswax, organic jojoba oil — and each product uses only what it actually needs. Our Whipped Body Cream, for example, is made without honey.
What changes between them is mostly texture, and texture is really just a question of how much beeswax is in the room. More beeswax, firmer product, more staying power. Less beeswax, lighter product, faster sink-in. That's the entire secret.
One thing worth saying up front, because it's the bit people get wrong: these are all moisturisers. Every one of them. None of them is an emergency product you keep in a drawer for when things go wrong. They're designed for the skin you've got on an ordinary Tuesday — and yes, they're lovely on the dry, cross, weather-beaten bits too. But that's a bonus, not the job. Skin does far better with something good every day than with something rich once a crisis arrives.
Right. Which one's yours?

Whipped Face Tallow Cream — the everyday one
This is where most people start, and for good reason.
It's tallow whipped light and airy — the opposite of what you're picturing when you hear "beef fat." It melts on contact and sinks in rather than sitting on top. Morning, night, or both. If you want one product that replaces the moisturiser you're currently using and nothing else changes about your life, this is it.
Use: a small amount, warmed between fingertips, pressed into clean skin. Genuinely less than you think.
Whipped Body Tallow Cream — the same idea, adjusted
Identical thinking, scaled up. Light, whipped, sinks in, doesn't leave you sticking to your clothes — which is the usual complaint about body products rich enough to actually do something.
This is your everyday, all-over cream: arms, legs, shoulders, the lot. After a shower, while skin's still slightly damp, is when it does its best work. It'll happily sort out elbows, knees and that stretch of forearm that never seems happy — but don't reserve it for them. It's for all of you, most days.
It's also our shortest formula — three ingredients: British grass-fed tallow, organic beeswax, organic jojoba oil. No honey in this one. Which, as it happens, makes the unscented version the one families reach for when there's a baby in the house.
Soft Tallow Balm — the weekly one
A little more beeswax, so it sets softer and richer than the creams but still yields easily on the fingertip.
Think of this as your once-or-twice-a-week moisturiser — the deeper drink that sits alongside your daily cream rather than replacing it. Sunday night, after a bath, before bed. It's richer and it stays put longer than a cream, so it carries on working while you sleep instead of vanishing in five minutes.
You don't need a problem to justify it. Perfectly happy skin still enjoys a proper feed now and again, and this is that. It's simply a nicer, slower version of the thing you already do every day.
And yes — when February gets at your knuckles, or your heels have had enough, this is the one you'll be glad is in the cupboard. It's very good on the cross bits. But it isn't only for the cross bits, and if you save it for emergencies you'll miss the point of it.
Firm Tallow Balm — the everyday workhorse
Most beeswax, firmest set, longest staying power.
This is a daily moisturiser for hands that get properly used and weather that doesn't negotiate. Gardening, building, walking the coast path in a February wind, washing your hands fifteen times a shift. It's the one that's still there an hour later, doing its job, when a lighter product would have long since given up.
The mistake is treating it as a repair job — something you reach for once your hands have already cracked. It works far better as the thing you put on before the day happens. Morning, after washing up, last thing at night. Used daily, it's simply a moisturiser built for a harder life than most.
Warm it between your fingers for a second or two — it softens instantly and goes on smoothly. It isn't hard work; it's just built to last.
Lip & Nail Tallow Balm — the pocket one
Same honest ingredients, small enough to live in a coat pocket or a bag. Lips, cuticles, the corners of your nails.
The nice thing here is knowing exactly what's in it. Lip balm is the one product you unquestionably end up eating a bit of, and ours is a list you could read aloud without embarrassing yourself.
Scented or unscented Tallow?
Every product comes both ways, and it's a genuine preference, not a quality difference.
Unscented is exactly that — no essential oil at all. It isn't "masking" anything either, because properly rendered tallow doesn't smell beefy. That off-putting smell people warn you about is a rendering failure, not an inherent property of tallow. Ours is rendered slowly and carefully so unscented actually means neutral.
Scented adds one thing and one thing only: organic sweet orange essential oil in a vitamin E carrier. It's bright, warm and gone within a minute or two of application. It's a small pleasure, not a perfume.
If your skin is reactive, start unscented. Fewer variables. (More on that in our sensitive skin guide.)
"But which is for men and which is for women?"
None of them. All of them.
We haven't split the range into a pink half and a blue half, because skin doesn't work that way and neither, frankly, do people. The bloke who wants a light face cream should have a light face cream. The woman who wants the heavy-duty Firm Balm for her allotment should have the Firm Balm. Choose by what your skin needs and what you'll actually enjoy using — not by which shelf the marketing department decided you belong on.
How much to use (the bit everyone gets wrong)
Less. Really.
Because tallow is so close to your skin's own oils, a small amount goes a remarkably long way. The single most common mistake is treating it like a supermarket body lotion and scooping out a great handful — at which point yes, of course you'll feel greasy, and you'll blame the tallow rather than the quantity.
Start with a modest amount, warm it between your fingertips until it turns glossy, and press it in. If it's still sitting on top after a minute, you used too much. Next time, use half.
A jar lasts a lot longer than people expect.
How they fit together
If you want the honest picture of how most people end up using these, it's this:
- Every day: Whipped Face Cream on your face, Whipped Body Cream on the rest of you. Or the Firm Balm, if your hands earn it.
- Once or twice a week: Soft Balm, for a richer feed while you sleep.
- Whenever: Lip & Nail Balm, because it lives in your pocket.
That's it. Not a routine so much as a rhythm — something good most days, something richer now and again.
The word to notice there is most days. Skin isn't a thing you fix; it's a thing you look after. A modest amount of something honest, applied regularly, does more good over a year than the richest jar in the world used twice in a crisis.
Genuinely can't decide?
Then get the Whipped Tallow Face Cream in Sweet Orange and see how you feel about tallow in a fortnight. It's the gentlest introduction, it's the one most people stay with, and if you love it you can work outwards from there.
There's no routine to learn. No order of operations. No step four.
That was always the point.
Evolved Tallow products are cosmetic moisturisers made from British grass-fed tallow and a short list of organic ingredients — full list on every jar. Nothing here is medical advice, and our products are not intended to treat, cure or prevent any skin condition. If your skin is sensitive, we'd always suggest a small patch test first.
